Interpretations of Art

Image
Part 1   1.         I think that the cave artist is trying to represent their community which includes their environmental surroundings.   The painting is also trying to illustrate to other travelers that may be passing by and seeking shelter that this region is habitable. Some of these paintings may also serve as a warning to other civilizations or even their own community. In one of the paintings there is an animal present that looks like a bison and a human laying on the ground next to it. I interpreted the painting as a precaution not to get to close to this animal because there may be serious consequences. The painting in the caves also express their respect for nature. A lot of the illustrations have animals present. 2.         There are a lot of animals that are present in the painting because they are also native to the region. It was stated that 6,000 representations o...

Yanomamo Revenge Killings

Image
The Yanomamo population do not have any formal laws. They also do not have written language. When it comes to killing they practice revenge warfare in the form of raids. The men that participate in revenge raids' lives are also put in danger as well since families of the victims will also seek revenge.  In  Western culture killing someone is a very serious offense. You will be punished for killing someone by being in prison. The government does not give someone a pass out of prison simply because it was revenge killing. We follow a legal system to prosecute anyone that has killed someone.  In the Yanomamo population revenge killing is essentially a “tit for tit” as expressed in the reading. If a family member is killed by someone or if someone passes away they will seek revenge. The Yanomamo believe that a person becomes ill from someone performing harmful magic and will kill those that were involved in inflicting the harmful magic. Anot...

Communication is Key

Part 1  At the beginning of the experiment, it felt a little awkward. We knew that I couldn't speak so it took about 2-3 minutes for us to adjust to doing what we were previously doing.  While we sat on the bed I had pointed to my sister to pass me the my phone. She however, understood to pass me my remote, I had to point a couple of times for her to finally pass me the phone. She asked me to tell her time. I then demonstrated with my fingers that it was 1:30. This was a little hard because I knew, I could tell her the one by simply holding one finger. I had to figure out how to express the 30 minutes. After I showed her with my hands, she understood. She then asked me how my day was. Now this was a little harder. My first instinct was to verbally tell her. I had to step back and think about how I wanted to respond. I ended up having to tell her my day was so so by moving my hand a certain way. She then asked why it was so so and all I could think of was to shrug. At thi...

Zulu and Andean Indian Enviroments

Image
Zulu Environment  The Zulu population makes up 22% of the 45 million people living in South Africa. They reside near the Indian Ocean and the west Drakenberg mountains. They are surrounded by a variety of ecosystems that they use to their advantage. Throughout the entire year, they receive 35.2 inches of rainfall. This rainfall is essential for growing their food and keeping their livestock. During their summer season, it's not like the temperature here in California.Their summer temperatures range from 67-70 fahrenheit.     Physical Adaptations Due to European colonialism, Zulu were forced to change the patterns of how they utilize their land. More large-scale farming came to be causing the Zulu to look for different areas to farm. This made it very difficult for the Zulu population because floods were very common with their frequent rainfalls.  If they were not diligent on upkeep of the crops, the whole village would suffer from malnutrition. To help better ...

Body and Soul of Nacerima

After reading the insightful information about the Nacerima population: I have concluded that they are very spiritual, secretive, organized, traditional and dedicated. Their spiritual beliefs go beyond what I have ever imagined or let alone experienced. To start off, they believe in magical medicine and magical tools. Horace Miner explains in the first paragraphs of Body Ritual of the Nacerima that the Nacerima population exhibit a shrine in their homes and provide magical offerings. “In the chest are kept the many charms and magical potions without which no native believes he could live.” (Horace Miner, Body Ritual of the Nacerima , 1956). In addition to having magical potions in their shrine, they bring daily holy water purified by a priest, “The holy waters are secured from the Water Temple of the community, where the priests conduct elaborate ceremonies to make the liquid ritually pure” (Horace Miner, Body Ritual of the Nacerima , 1956). Those that can afford more than one s...

Deserted Island

Image
If I was ever left stranded on a deserted island I would have the following items with me, a Swiss Army knife and a metal container. The Swiss Army knife would be particle in my day by day use. I would use the knife  to cut fruit from trees, cut leaves from plants for house and bedding. I would also be able to use the scissors to cut any protein I find on the Island. The second item I would bring would be a metal container. This container would serve as a source of collecting water or a a pan to cook a meal. By meal I mean if I get lucky enough to catch a fish.
